FAQ
What is tallow, and where does it come from?
Tallow is a nutrient-rich fat rendered from cow suet, long valued in traditional skincare for nourishing, protecting, and restoring the skin. Today, it’s a natural, wholesome alternative for healthy skin.
Where do you source your suet from?
Our tallow products are made with tallow from 100% grass-fed & grass-finished cattle raised without antibiotics, hormones or mRNA vaccines. We source our suet from various U.S. farms committed to organic, regenerative agriculture - completely free from pesticides and GMOs.
Does tallow balm smell like beef?
We carefully render and purify our tallow to minimize its natural scent. However, since it’s made from pure beef suet and never chemically processed, a subtle natural aroma may remain. Our finished balm has a mild, pleasant herbal scent from the herbs infused into our tallow.
Is tallow balm good for acne-prone skin?
Yes — tallow can help balance oily skin when used sparingly. Along with the soothing herbs it can help calm breakouts, reduce redness, and support healthier skin. Blended with non-comedogenic jojoba oil, our balm moisturizes, balances, and soothes all skin types without clogging pores.
What other ingredients are in your balm?
We believe what you put on your skin matters, which is why our tallow is made exclusively with USDA-certified organic ingredients.
While each product is unique, all our balms feature grass-fed & finished tallow blended with cold-pressed unrefined jojoba oil and infused with calendula, chamomile, and marshmallow root. Some also include a subtle touch of essential oils or other natural infusions (like coffee or vanilla beans) for gentle fragrance and added skin benefits.
Can I use tallow balm on my children?
Our tallow balm is made with gentle, natural ingredients, ideal for delicate skin. Parents use it for diaper rash, dry patches, and irritation. For children under 2, we recommend the unscented, herb-infused balm, which we also use on our own kids. Balms with essential oils are safely diluted at 1% for children 2 and older. Always patch-test and consult your pediatrician for sensitive babies.
Does tallow help with wrinkles or aging skin?
Yes — tallow is rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, which support skin repair and elasticity. Its natural fats closely resemble the oils your skin produces, helping to deeply moisturize and protect against dryness and fine lines. Many people find that regular use of tallow balm helps their skin feel smoother, firmer, and more resilient over time.
How should I store my tallow balm?
Store your tallow balm in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight—room temperature is ideal. Tallow is a stable fat and doesn’t require refrigeration, but keeping it in a consistent environment preserves its texture and shelf life. Slight softening or hardening with normal temperature changes is fine, but large fluctuations—like those in a bathroom—can cause the balm to become gritty, so we don’t recommend storing it there.
What if my balm feels gritty?
Tallow is a stable fat, but large temperature swings—like repeatedly moving from warm to cold—can cause uneven crystallization, resulting in a slightly grainy or gritty texture. This does not affect the quality or effectiveness of your balm. To restore a smooth texture, follow these steps:
Gently Remelt Your Balm:
- Seal the lid tightly on your tallow jar.
- Place the jar in a pot of water, filling about halfway up the jar.
- Gently warm the water until the tallow has fully melted.
- Remove from heat with tongs.
Method 1: Unwhipped (Balm Consistency)
- Place the melted tallow jar in the fridge for 15–20 minutes until firm.
- Your balm will set to a smooth, balm-like consistency, ready for use.
Method 2: Whipped (Creamy Texture)
- Pour the melted tallow into a bowl and chill in the fridge for 5-10 minutes.
- Remove when the tallow becomes cloudy/white but is still soft enough to indent with your finger.
- Use a hand mixer to whip to your desired texture, then scoop back into the jar.
Storage Tip:
Store your balm in a cool, stable environment to prevent future crystallization. Avoid bathrooms or other areas with frequent temperature changes.
